	About

Yair Kira is a product designer and visual artist exploring the space between functional design and conceptual artworks. A Polymath that uses his work as mean to continually gain new knowledge, Yair studied Electronics and Physics and received a BA degree in Chemical Engineering from Technion: Israel Institute of Technology. While there, he had an opportunity to learn from and work alongside sculptor and painter Yael Taycher. After working as a project manager in the technology industry and finishing his MBA degree, Yair studied Product Design at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). Currently, Kira is developing products for the medical industry using emerging technologies such as 3D printing, and he teaches 3D modeling for fashion and product design students at the UdK. Due to his vast experience and artistic passions, Kira develops unexpected production approaches that challenge technology and its relation to a human environment. His works are presented in art exhibitions and design fairs around Europe. He was nominated as a newcomer for the German Design Award - 2022.

		<description>Artist Statement

Born in Israel and grew up in a family that has both Yemen and German roots, my life was always full of different cultures and traditions. I learned that my identity can comfortably change on a broader scale of possibilities and viewpoints. This influences my work as an artist and designer, and I understand myself as a bridge or connecting point between people, topics and genres.
I am educated in electronics and physics, finished a Chemical engineering degree and gained a Master in Business Administration. After working as a project manager for several years in the industry, I earned my second bachelor’s degree as a product designer at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). I use my professional experiences and knowledge by combining, mixing and questioning it, inspired by nature and human social challenges.
I understand my artistic practice as an experiment within and outside the traditional boundaries of science and technology and beyond norms used in the industry. As a kind of explorer, I have the desire for searching new possibilities for creation in an open process. I am looking for the moment of surprise in the creation process going through long research and exploration.In my works, I try to find the individual story of the subjects I’m working with. Each object or machine is an individual that I strive to get closer to in a kind of naive manner, both physically and emotionally.In my recent works, I am working with 3D printers, using failures, and irregularities as an invitation to build closeness and intimate relationship within this new digital surrounding.

		<description>Tabu Jungle

Bad Sex-Education or No Sex-Education: Many of us have gone through either of these. Much too often Sex Education is still framed in heteronormativity focusing on reproduction and contraception. We are not given a broader vocabulary beyond maneuvering risks, fear, and prevention.‘Tabu Jungle’ is an experimental online event for initiating conversations around sexual health that are so important for our well-being and too often still kept silent. The online exhibition space was conceited after a trilingual survey about tabu topics in sexual health. The virtual exhibition space was explored by the visitors as avatars who got in conversation with other visitors they met in the space.

In collaboration with Marie Dietze and Dorota Orlof.
This work was part of People to People Playground Festival 2021, which is organized by the German-Israeli Future Forum Foundation

		<description>
	CIRCLES

CIRCLES is a large-scale multidisciplinary project merging voice, color, and movement illuminating the power of collective intelligence experienced both online and in the physical world. In an immersive live participatory symphony, CIRCLES brings together hundreds of singers in an adaptable multi-dimensional production of digital-physical hybridized performances. An audiovisual ritual where music, choreography, visual art, and video projection are composed into a symbiotic and dynamic colorful artistic expression celebrating human relationships. CIRCLES introduces a series of movement and voice exercises that encourage mutual responsibility. Each participant's unique contributions transform the collective experience into a cutting-edge large-scale work of art. Like bees, birds, or drones, they embody the notions of swarm behavior, morphing CIRCLES into a continually evolving entity. CIRCLES engages individuals, communities, and cities as a multifaceted project including performance, installation, and digital technology-based forms.

CIRCLES premiered in Stuttgart, Germany, on October 3, 2021, as part of Die Irritierte Stadt Festival.

“Open Closed Open” is a multimedia installation that explores a multitude of perceptualpositions realized as a result of the continual movement of organic materials. Sand, lightand human voice are shaped by a layer of technological interventions that imposevarying degrees of control and predetermined roles upon both themselves and theresulting response of the materials.

The title of the work is excerpted from a poem by Yehuda Amichai reflecting on the cycle of formation and deformation of individuals and groups in terms of their self-definition in general, and of the Jewish identity in particular. The Hebrew language appears in the mediums of writing and sound in both permanent and temporary manners, fragmented into individual letters or assembled into words — writing andrewriting themselves in space.

Each individual who enters into the exhibition space contributes to the work’s evolution. Emerging from a room comprising audio and visual components, visitors findthemselves in the midst of a large sandbox where a robot continuously reforms the terrain while driving over and writing Hebrew letters in the sand. Custom-made tools arescattered around the sandbox, which the visitors are invited to use to reform and flatten the terrain, preparing further surfaces for the robot’s calligraphic activities. Hundreds audio recordings of vocalized Hebrew letters comprise the generative and electronically shaped soundtrack. Each vocal fragment has been composed individually, yet thesegestural materials converge in continuously varying densities, forming a rich, ever-changing soundscape projected over 10 speakers in the space. Depending on theirmovement, visitors may hear a single whispering voice or an assemblage of vocal gestures. A live visualization of visitors’ movements inside the sandbox is projected on a large, transparent screen hung at the back of the space. This animated representation reflects the movement and interactions in the exhibition and, along with the robotic and audio components, offers a stylized perspective on the social relations occurring between individuals and within groups.

Berlin-based artists Liat Grayver, Amir Shpilman and Yair Kira were awarded the first DAGESH Art Prize for the creation of “Open, Closed, Open”.
*Yehuda Amichai’s “I Wasn’t One of the Six Million: And What Is My Life Span? Open ClosedOpen” was published in a collection of his poems titled Open, Closed, Open. Schocken Publishing House Ltd. Tel Aviv, 1998.

		<description>Natur der Kunstformen

is the outcome of a research work of new methods for using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printer as a crafting tool. The project challenged the common perception of a 3D printer as a closed ‘black box’ that tries to precisely reconstruct a 3D model displayed on a screen. This project used PLA filament not only to create form, but to also bind a variety of materials together.

The objects that came out of the experimental research are designed to evoke an emotional connection, that is often absent in the typically monochrome and pre-defined 3D printed objects. Instead, the objects have been constructed using systematically embedded irregularities and errors which emphasise the physical forces acting on the extruded filament, similar to processes found in nature. The connection between the viewer and the objects is prompted by the feeling of the sublime. This type of aesthetic is possible by liberating the printer to be a co-creator. What is usually considered to be a failure in the 3D printing world, is embraced to create a unique structure — a collaboration between machine and maker.

The work was presented in Designtransfer, Pecha Kucha Night and Hybrid Plattform on "Long Night of the Sciences", imm Cologne, and Salone del Mobille.&#38;nbsp;

	One Sheet

One sheet is a kinetic sculpture made together with the author Etgar Keret for the Inside Out Exhibition at the Jewish Museum Berlin. For the exhibition, Keret wrote nine short stories based on memories of his mother. The stories portray both his day-to-day family life in Israel and traumatic war experiences inspired by the life of the author’s mother, who was born in Poland in 1934.
One Sheet sculpture is the main exhibit in the work and is based on the Story&#38;nbsp;Birthdays&#38;nbsp;which is the key element to understanding all other texts. In this story, the mother at the age of 80 saw her birth certificate for the first time, realizing that her birthday was on a different date as she celebrated all her life. This notion surprised and shook her reality up to a point of insecurity about what can she trust in the world as she knew it.
The sculpture is made of a human size metal sheet hanging from the ceiling, and it resembles an old Suriel document. The slight vibrations of the metal make it feel like a living creature while creating a calming sound in the space. At times the sheet vibrates strongly, creating an unexpected, frightening roaring sound. The experience of the visitors resembles the feelings of the mother as one sheet of paper shook her entire reality.
